The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay - Review

Pay attention to the MATURE label on this title, I'd say kids over the age of 16 can play this game, the level of profanity, violence, and smoking would suggest The Chronicles of Riddick is not your average birthday gift for the kid. However, it is entertaining, if you can get buy the cons. Butcher Bay is the prequel to the Vin Diesel movie "Chronicles of Riddick" released in early June. The game opens with Riddick in custody and about to land on the prison planet. The game gives you two ways to do that -- quick and silent, or slow and noisy. Then you have to enter the prison, take out guards, venture through airvents and corridors, find some heavy weaponry, perform hand-to-hand combat, learn to use the shadows to your advantage. That's a taste of level one, which turns out to be a dream sequence, but does well to introduce the gamer to what can be expected throughout. Some issues other than the notable violence problems are the poor use of shadows, and the lack of firepower. Now this is not something to fret about, but first person shooter buffs beware of the heavy hand to hand combat emphasis. The shadow problems go like this: movement throughout the game is categorized by stealthy avoiding detection, one of the methods employed is the use of your shadow. Unfortunately your own shadow appears wrong most of the time, a solid black outline of yourself, and in most cases, you end up seeing your shadow more than yourself. Although the game sports some terrific graphics, this component is lacking. Other than this, many reviewers toutted the game as far better than the movie, venture out and buy the Xbox version today, but beware of the age rating.
