Activision has done great things with its Spider-Man license. The game based on the original movie was good, and when the second film turned things up a notch, so did its digital counterpart. Now, Spider-Man 2 is coming to the PSP, and it mixes the best of both worlds into one versatile gaming experience. This is not a port of the console Spider-Man 2, though it obviously follows the same storyline. Peter Parker must contend with the ever-maddening scientist Doctor Octavius -- better known as Doctor Octopus. On the PSP, Activision and developer Vicarious Visions bring back several previous villains, such as Shocker and Vulture, who both appeared in the first Spidey movie game. Mysterio and Rhino are also causing mischief. In fact, in one thrilling boss encounter, you'll have to take on the combo of the big, dumb Shocker and the bigger, dumber Rhino at the same time! The game is in 3D, and beautifully so. Spidey's model shows some amazing lighting, and both indoor and outdoor environments look great. Adding to the story are 12 minutes of PSP-exclusive CG. The gameplay shows the most crossover between the latest Spider-Man games. Web-swinging uses what's been dubbed "easy-swing." It may not be as robust as the console version, but the tradeoff is that it will be easier to do, without a high learning curve. Just hold the swing button and keep going. Combat uses punch and kick buttons. Switch up presses for combos, which can dizzy one foe or fling a plethora of them. In one cool move, Spidey can jump onto a bad guy's shoulders, punch him for a while, then execute a reverse hurricanrana wrestling move to take him out. Targeting makes it possible to focus on one threat at a time. Of course, Peter has to be packing his webbing. At the start, your offensive web moves are limited, but like everything else, they can be updated by cashing in hero points. These are rewards for doing well through a level. You can use them to buy more health, extra attacks (both web-based or hand-to-hand), and even a gallery of the CG scenes in the game. There are 19 levels total in the game, consisting of rooftops, subways, and laboratory environments. You'll see an impressive amount of interaction as your fighting causes destruction.
