Next Gen DVD Talks between Toshiba and Sony Stall Can't Post

The Yomiuri newpaper reported that talks have broken down between the groups representing the next-generation HD-DVD and Blu-ray disc formats. The time for unification has passed, according to officials at Sony and Toshiba.

HD-DVD is backed by Toshiba, NEC, Sanyo, and Microsoft. Meanwhile, Blu-ray was developed by Sony and Panasonic. The battle is important because it will help define the shape of the film, TV, and video game industries for years to come. Sony and Toshiba have both expressed interested in avoiding a costly format war--which brings back bad memories of the infamous Betamax/VHS brawls of the early 80's-- but the companies have repeatedly been unable to come to mutually agreeable terms. Disc capacity and production cost have reportedly been the two major obstacles, and this final breakdown in talks could represent the final nail in the coffin. There's still a chance, but that chance grows slimmer by the day as both companies hurdle towards retail destiny. Reuters in London, for instance, reported that a senior Toshiba official confirmed that HD-DVD products would begin shipment in early 2006.

Sony and Panasonic are backing the Blu-ray DVD technology, which has the advantage of being included in Sony's upcoming PlayStation 3. High-capacity Blu-ray discs can hold roughly 25 gigabytes of data per layer, compared to the 4 gigabyte capacity of current DVDs. The disadvantage is that Blu-ray discs will reportedly be more expensive to produce, at least until production methods are fully optimized.

HD-DVD is a rival format that can be produced using existing DVD production technology. The downside, however, is that it doesn't hold nearly as much data as Sony's Blu-ray. HD-DVDs can fit in the neighborhood of 15 gigabytes per layer, compared to Blu-Ray's 25 gigabytes.

hi,

Also, besides the fact that these companies are making the DVD more powerful, these companies are also working on lowering the prices, so that these HD-DVDs and Blu-rays are affordable.
