Charlie and the Chocolate Factory will arrive as a video game the same day the feature film is slated for release--sometime in 2005. Production began two months ago in London. It is tentatively set for a July 15 release. The studio's Interactive Entertainment arm has awarded Global Star Software, a unit of Take Two Interactive Software Inc., the exclusive worldwide license to develop, publish and distribute video games inspired by the film. Jason Hall, senior vp at Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment, said it was too early to determine the extent of Burton's involvement in the game, but it would definitely reflect the director's vision of Dahl's internationally beloved novel. He also believed there was strong potential for an interactive entertainment franchise. "Our goal is to try to retain some of the new ideas of the way the story is being told now so there is continuity where appropriate," Hall said. Take Two's Global Star Software unit will manage the game development for next-generation consoles, hand-held and PC. The console games will be developed by High Voltage Software and the hand-held and PC games by Backbone Entertainment.

The videogame adaptation of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, published by Take-Two Interactive Softwar and licensed by Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment, is now available in retail stores across North America for the PlayStation 2, the Xbox, the Nintendo Game Boy Advance and PC, with the Nintendo GameCube version available next week. The games celebrity lineup includes the likeness of Oscar-nominated actor Johnny Depp, who stars as Willy Wonka in the film, which is based on the Roald Dahl book and directed by Tim Burton. Additionally, the following talent from the film have provided their voice and likeness for the game: Freddie Highmore as Charlie Bucket, David Kelly as Grandpa Joe, Philip Wiegratz as Augustus Gloop, Julia Winter as Veruca Salt, Jordan Fry as Mike Teavee, and AnnaSophia Robb as Violet Beauregarde. Deep Roy provides his likeness as the Oompa-Loompas, and Geoffrey Holder provides his voice as the Narrator. Burton has provided creative consultation for the game. Basing a game on this extraordinary Tim Burton film and having this remarkable lineup of talent extend their roles into the Charlie and the Chocolate Factory videogame will greatly enhance the players’ overall experience, said Philippe Erwin, Vice President of Production for Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment. Players can engage in their favorite film scenes, which are further expanded inside the game with hours of gameplay.
