Online Gaming Next Big Thing Can't Post

A recent survey presents new evidence that online gaming is the next big thing in the entertainment and gaming industry, revealing that playing opponents over the Internet has become a preferred way to play for many Canadians. The poll determined that 65% of console owners are now playing video games online with about one-third (32%) of Canadians playing games online more often than they play offline. More than two-thirds (67%) of Canadian video game fans who are not currently playing online intend to do so within the next year.

Broadband Internet adoption appears to be fueling the growth in online gaming with 89% of video game players enjoying high speed Internet access at home. For those Canadians who do not currently have Net access at home, 77% think that online gaming is a good reason to get connected. The survey of 2,953 Canadians of all ages, commissioned by Xbox Canada during the months of June and July 2004, revealed that the ability to play video games online is affecting purchase decisions. 55% of Canadian gamers rank online capabilities as an important feature affecting their decision to purchase games and 44% of players want online voice capabilities in their games.

The motivators for playing online are as varied as the people who responded. Almost three-quarters (72%) play over the Internet for the excitement of multi-player online modes. A quarter of those polled like online game play because they enjoy building their online reputation.

Although 79% of video game fans rank video games as more entertaining than Hollywood movies, 73% of gamers still prefer going on a date over playing video games.

"Canada is ranked as one of the top countries for online gaming in the world. Cities like Calgary and Toronto boast massive online gaming communities," said Chris Wolfe, Xbox Product Manager, Microsoft Canada. "Online gaming has added a whole new dimension to the gaming experience because it has taken the social element of video games to a whole new level."

Xbox Live continues to generate broad appeal, having recently broken the 1 million member mark. This holiday season promises to be the best ever on Xbox Live with several EA SPORTS titles coming online to Xbox, joining the highly anticipated Halo 2 launch on November 9th.

Re: [Barry] Online Gaming Next Big Thing [In reply to] Can't Post

For me personally it's all about the online.

If i was a game reviewer the highest a game could get without implementing Some sort of online and/or mutiplayer aspect is a 5/10. Because for me theres two parts to a game the singleplayer and the multiplayer and without the multiplayer you, In my eyes, only have half a game.

but on the other hand I know people who couldn't care less about multiplayer or online. What makes this article even more interesting is that i see it in affect!Alot of my friends who do not particularly enjoy online gaming are getting into it and having a good time
