Nintendo reported a 36 percent jump in profit for the nine months ended Dec. 31 as favorable currency rates offset dipping sales. Nintendo posted a net profit of 92.2 billion yen ($801 million) in the nine months ended Dec. 31, up from 67.8 billion yen for the same period a year earlier. Sales for the three quarters fell 1.7 percent to 412.3 billion yen ($3.6 billion) from 419.4 billion yen. Sales of its GameCube video game console declined as the game machine is coming close to the end of its product life cycle, Nintendo said. The company has promised a new console called Revolution later this year. But sales of its portable game player Nintendo DS increased, but that machine does not add to profits as much as the GameCube, the company said.
GameCube console sales fell to 2.12 million machines worldwide in the
nine months from 3.46 million a year earlier, while global sales of its
Nintendo DS, which went on sale in 2004, rose to 9.16 million machines
from 2.84 million. Nintendo said it will start selling an advanced
version of the Nintendo DS in March in Japan, which is thinner and
lighter than the current model and can adjust brightness of the screen. Join DVG Forums 4 FREE! Only takes 5 seconds to join!
