Nintendo has raised its earnings outlook for its fiscal first half, saying a strong U.S. dollar had helped its business. The Kyoto-based video game console and software maker said it expects a profit of 46 billion yen ($414.4 million US) on sales of 185 billion yen ($1.67 billion) for the April-September period. In May, the company had forecast profits of 25 billion yen ($226 million) on sales of 200 billion yen ($1.8 billion). Nintendo said the stronger-than-expected U.S. currency boosted the value of its dollar-denominated assets in yen terms. The company said it booked a foreign exchange profit of 36 billion yen ($324.3 million). It had forecast a rate of 105 yen to the dollar for the fiscal year. The rate at the end of September was 111.05 yen per dollar. The euro was also stronger at 137.04 yen at the end of September, compared with 127 yen on which Nintendo's earlier fiscal year earnings estimate was based. Nintendo said it also expects 84 billion yen ($756.7 million) in net profit for the current fiscal year, which will end March 31, 2005, up 14 per cent from 70 billion yen ($630.6 million) in the previous projection. The company maintained its sales forecast for the full year at 530 billion yen ($4.77 billion). Its new earnings forecast for the year to March is now based on an estimated dollar rate of 110 to 135 yen for the euro. Nintendo, which sold nearly 54 million Game Boy Advance machines worldwide for over the past three years, will announce its global sales for the July-September quarter on Nov. 25.
