Mario Pinball Land: Review

One may consider this game for the kids, or just as a simple, fun pinball game. The typical Mario story includes the kidnapping of Peach from nemsis Bowser. The evil scientist from Luigi Mansion uses his Spherifier to transform Mario into a ball - that's right, the ball is Mario's face.... Just activate the flippers and away you go right? There's more to it than pinballs hitting certain targets to gain the highest score possible. Instead, Mario must roll around to hit enemies, doorways, and battle bosses by only using flippers! Mario will also collect coins, stars and keys in the process, and in fact, collecting stars is how to move on to the next pinball table. Similar to Super Mario 64, Mario Pinball Land has doorways that can only be entered if you have certain amount of stars and similar to Super Mario Sunshine, Mario Pinball Land has different colored coins. Also, you can bump into Toad who runs a little shop, and use the coins collected to buy some useful items. Buy a pipe to block the gap between the flippers, or buy a mushroom to become Super Mario ball. Gameplay and looks basically is set up as a series of pinball tables, duh. In each table, you will run into familiar enemies, such as goombas, koopa troopas and shyguys. However, instead of performing a signature jump to defeat these enemies, Mario will smack into them in his spherical form. The enemies leave coins behind for you to collect, or lead you to a new area. Sometimes defeating all the enemies in the current pinball table will cause a star appear, otherwise there is some other puzzle to solve. Either way, the goal is to collect as many stars as you can to gain access to more pinball tables. What's nice is that Mario cannot die by bumping into enemies on the pinball table. Since each pinball world contains a series of pinball tables, the only way for Mario to die is to fall between the gap of the two flippers in the very first pinball table. What's not so nice that is if you happen to fall between the two flippers before making the star appear, any work you did in that pinball table will not be saved. When you re-enter that pinball table, you will have to solve that puzzle again to make the star appear. This is what makes the game challenging. Some pinball tables have some difficult puzzles to solve, and if you happen to fall right when the star appears, it's extremely frustrating knowing that when you re-enter that pinball table again, you will have to start from scratch for that particular star. While fans of the Mario franchise will enjoy the obvious references of past Mario games, those who are strictly into pinball games may not enjoy this game as much. Mario Pinball Land lacks a tilt feature and also lacks several targets. Most of the pinball tables found in Mario Pinball Land are pretty much free space, with the exception of enemies. Sometimes aiming for a certain doorway can be frustrating since you don't have a lot of targets to bounce off of, and sometimes your goal is based on only aim or luck. Whether you're ricocheting after stars, bouncing off Goombas and Monty Moles or battling big bosses, you'll flip over this rolling adventure!
