Star Fox: Assault Preview and Discussion

Starfox provided unique controls and vehicles in the 64 version when it was released, but I have to say I wasn't one who enjoyed the whole gameplay and story concept. Rare's Star Fox Adventures takes the franchise into another direction -- one inspired by the Zelda games. Developed by Namco, Fox McCloud and his band of strange heroes have returned to their roots for a full-blown shooter. Although the game enables players to take to the skies or even outer space in Fox's Arwing ship, all the while shooting down hordes of enemies, it also dishes out new ground-based missions where the McCloud heroes go it on foot. When Fox is in the sky, the levels unfold in classic N64 style, scrolling forward while unleashing dozens of enemies for the character to blast down at any given moment. And when he's on the ground, a first-person shooter style control setup allows the mascot to engage in gun battles with nearby enemies. Fox can even hop in any vehicle in his path, such as tanks. Namco has with Assault also created a deep four-player split-screen mode. Star Fox: Assault looks to be polishing up before release, hopefully saving it from some earlier pitfalls highlighted at game shows. Expect a graphically impressive, fast-moving update to the Star Fox license when Assault arrives in February.
