Ubisoft Says It wants to stay independent Can't Post

Ubisoft reiterated that it wants to stay independent. Ubisoft has been the subject of takeover talk ever since Redwood City, Calif.-based Electronic Arts, maker of blockbuster games such as "Madden NFL" and "SimCity", snapped up a 20 percent stake in the family-run company late last year.

Guillemot said he would rather a tie-up with an entertainment or media company than a take-over by another video games maker, and he would oppose Electronic Arts — the company's biggest shareholder — getting a seat on the board.

Guillemot added that Ubisoft didn't foresee any merger in the near future.

Ubisoft apparently not only wants to remain independent but is also looking to make several acquisitions in a consolidating sector, its chairman said in an interview.

"Nothing has been signed but we are looking at two or three deals with companies whose turnover does not exceed 100 million euros ($118 million). It could be small publishers, studios or even known brands that we would develop," Yves Guillemot told French weekly La Vie Financiere.

Guillemot said relations with Electronics Arts were "normalized" and said contacts were "sporadic." "Let this be clear: we are not for sale. We think that it's more in Electronic Arts' interest that Ubisoft remains independent and achieves a strong growth of its revenues and earnings," he said.
