EA to Create Godfather Game Can't Post

EA is slated to begin work on "The Godfather", based on both Francis Ford Coppola's 1972 movie and the original novel by Mario Puzo. Besides enabling the virtual Brando to reprise his Oscar-winning role, EA also secured the rights to the Grammy-winning music Nino Rota composed for the movie and its soundtrack album.

EA acquired the rights to use Brando's likeness for the game prior to the actor's death July 1 and is working with Paramount Pictures during the project. The game developer and publisher has not announced deals with any other talent from the film, but the game is not slated to ship until fall 2005.

The "Scarface" game is a sequel to the 1983 film, allowing players to assume the role of crime boss Tony Montana in a third-person adventure. Screenwriter David McKenna wrote the script for that game, which is in development at Radical Games.

"The Godfather" video game, which is expected to earn a Mature rating, will allow players to become part of one of the most famous crime stories of all time. Although no details about the game have been released, gameplay is expected to blend elements of such popular crime video games as Take-Two Interactive's "Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas" and Activision's "True Crime: Streets of LA." Both allow players to explore the world on foot and in vehicles as they interact with characters and accomplish missions. Should "The Godfather" game follow this popular model, it would be EA's first entry into this best-selling crime genre.

Godfather Video Game Will Include Brando's Voice [In reply to] Can't Post

Eectronic Games said it plans a video game version of the classic film "The Godfather" using the actor's voice and likeness.
EA released that Brando did a recording session with game developers before he died last year, which the company will use for his character, Don Vito Corleone.

Actors James Caan -- who played Brando's son and heir apparent Sonny Corleone -- and Robert Duvall -- who played Brando's adopted son and advisor Tom Hagen -- will also lend their voices and likenesses to the game.

The game, scheduled for release this fall on most major platforms, puts the player in the role of an aspiring mobster who seeks to rise to the head of a crime family in late 1940s and early 1950s New York.

The new issue of Vanity Fair reported that Brando almost declined the legendary "Godfather" role because he felt it glorified the Mafia.

Godfather Video Game To go Beyond script [In reply to] Can't Post

EA Games, is utilizing next-generation technology to bring Francis Ford Coppola's Oscar-winning film to the interactive realm. But the source material is just the beginning of the game experience. The film's distributor, Paramount Pictures, and its Viacom Inc. parent granted Electronic Arts the rights to expand the fiction beyond the scope of the film and Mario Puzo's novel.

Beyond the virtual versions of Caan, Duvall and Marlon Brando, an additional 20-plus actors from "The Godfather" will appear in the game, including Lenny Montana (Luca Brasi) and John Martino (Paulie Gatto). Many characters will receive larger roles in the game since the 40-plus hours of gameplay allow for a longer story line, and new characters -- including a love interest for the player -- will be added.

Smith said no dialogue from the film will be used for the game because the sound quality is too dated to meet today's technology standards. Instead, all of the game's dialogue has been recorded anew. Brando spent four hours in a booth reprising his role of Don Vito Corleone before he died last year.

Duvall and Caan each will spend eight hours recording dialogue for the game, bringing consigliere Tom Hagen and Sonny Corleone back to life. In the game, Hagen will teach the player about the art of negotiation, and Sonny will point out the importance of intimidation. The player will interact with each of these characters throughout the game. To succeed, the player must balance the line between intimidation and negotiation.

Caan took the stage and said that getting into the recording booth was fun and that Sonny's voice came right back. Duvall joined him and added that working on the game was like doing looping for a movie he shot a week ago.

EA then showed a scene from the original film between Caan and Duvall, followed by their individual voice recording session, and then showed the in-game sequence. Even on current-generation consoles, the graphics were impressive. Two of the in-game sequences shown featured Xbox 2 graphics, the first public unveiling of Microsoft's new console that is expected to come out in the fall.

Back at EA's Redwood Shores Studio, a team of 100 is working on the first of what is expected to be a new franchise for EA. The publisher has the rights to create multiple games, and Campbell said the mythology will allow future games to go forward or backward in the timeline. The game's expected Mature rating will remain true to the fiction, and EA hopes this offer is something gamers cannot refuse.
